Citrix has abandoned its Olympus OpenStack distribution and will focus instead on its open-source CloudStack operating system, which it has contributed as a project under the Apache Software Foundation.

As part of the announcement, Citrix said CloudStack will continue to support Amazon’s APIs (application programming interfaces) and believes such support is crucial to the success of cloud platforms. It implied it has Amazon’s blessing.

The announcement could be seen as a blow to OpenStack, which has faced some criticism after strategic moves that alienated some users, although experts were quick to say the Citrix move might not have a significant impact on OpenStack.

Citrix is releasing Citrix CloudStack 3.0 under the Apache 2.0 license on Tuesday and also plans to offer a commercially supported distribution of Apache CloudStack. CloudStack is the open-source cloud operating system Citrix acquired along with Cloud.com last year.

Citrix said its announcement has wide support among companies already using CloudStack or that have made their products compatible with it. Fifty software and service providers including Engine Yard, RightScale, CumuLogic, Puppet Labs, Hortonworks, Opscode, Equinix, Juniper Networks and ScaleXtreme are supporting the project, Citrix said. More than 100 commercial production clouds are using CloudStack, some of which have tens of thousands of servers, Citrix said.

It believes open source is key to success for a cloud platform. “Unlike previous generations of computing, we believe this cloud platform build-out is going to be led by technologies that are first proven at scale at large production clouds and then made available to customers under an open-source license,” said Sameer Dholakia, group vice president and general manager of cloud platforms for Citrix. That process has proved successful for cloud technologies like Hadoop, Hive and Cassandra, which are open-source tools for building or managing databases, he noted. “We believe the same will prove true with cloud platforms that are running these new cloud services.”

Citrix thinks the opportunity is large. It hopes to emulate Red Hat, which grew itself into a billion-dollar business by selling products based on Linux. “We will be selling what we believe is likely to be a popular commercial distribution of [Apache CloudStack],” he said. Customers will want to buy such software from a large, established company like Citrix, he said.

The company expects to spend “in the seven figures” on engineering and marketing on the Apache CloudStack project, he said.

The move means Citrix is abandoning its work on its OpenStack distribution. OpenStack decided to create a foundation to back its project. The idea was to add legitimacy to the program, but the move made OpenStack less appealing to Citrix, Dholakia said.

“Citrix as a company does not believe the creation of a foundation is a trivial matter. It’s a task and a risk that is unnecessary to add to such a critical program … particularly when there is a tried and true foundation like Apache,” he said.

In addition, Citrix is firmly throwing its weight behind Amazon’s APIs. Using the same APIs means customers can more easily move workloads between Amazon Web Services and other clouds — namely, private clouds — that also support Amazon’s APIs. While OpenStack supports some Amazon APIs, it appears more interested in backing its own APIs.

“Amazon has invented and created this market. We believe the winning cloud platform will have to have a high degree of interoperability with Amazon,” he said.

Just a couple weeks ago, Amazon announced it backed Eucalyptus in its efforts to support the AWS APIs. It was the first time Amazon offered such backing for the use of its APIs. At the time, experts said that some businesses had been reluctant to use Eucalyptus because they were uncertain if Amazon approved of the use of its APIs. Without such approval, end users worried about potential intellectual property violations. In addition, it was always possible that Amazon could make changes to its APIs that could break the interoperability between a Eucalyptus cloud and Amazon’s cloud. As part of the Eucalyptus announcement, the companies said the partnership would ensure that Eucalyptus maintained compatibility with Amazon’s APIs and that Eucalyptus would more quickly be able to support more of Amazon’s APIs.

Citrix would not say if it, too, had Amazon’s official support. But it implied that it does. “The most important component of the Eucalyptus announcement was that it was non-exclusive. I can’t say that we have a public statement beyond that,” Dholakia said.

Citrix is not turning its back entirely on OpenStack. “We will continue to play an active role in the OpenStack community,” Dholakia said. It will continue working with OpenStack on support of Citrix’s hypervisor, for instance. Also, as OpenStack components mature, Citrix could integrate some of them in its own stack, he said.

One analyst thinks the OpenStack community won’t miss Citrix. “OpenStack had several months’ opportunity to work with Citrix on merging the CloudStack and OpenStack codebases. If this announcement were going to be a huge blow to them they would have done something to avert it; in other words, I don’t think the OpenStack developers are very invested in whether Citrix stays or goes,” said Rachel Chalmers, research director of infrastructure for The 451 Group, via email.

OpenStack has big-name backers, including AT&T, Dell and HP, and it’s too early to say what impact the Citrix move will have, said Stephen O’Grady, an analyst with Redmonk. “It’s not good news for OpenStack, obviously, but it’s also very early. They’ve built some momentum for themselves and it will be interesting to see what impact this news has on that,” he said.

It’s arduous to overstate how vital the Cisco Nexus data-center switching platform, set to be unveiled Monday, is to Cisco Systems: for the dominant networking vendor’s enterprise business, it is the biggest factor since the Catalyst 6000, that created its debut in 1999, in line with the 2 key executives on the project.

At a dinner with press last week, they compared it to the CRS-1 (Carrier Routing System), a large switch for the core of carrier networks that Cisco rolled out in 2004. To bring that platform to life, the corporate developed a brand new version of its flagship IOS (Internetworking Operating System) software and designed the hardware to scale up to 92Tbps of throughput. The core of the net is Cisco’s turf, and it wasn’t willing to grant any ground to upstarts.

The Nexus brings Cisco into not simply a brand new territory for its business, however a brand new product category: a unified switch that spans storage and computing in information centers and has security inbuilt. Given the stakes, superlatives are natural.

- one Nexus chassis are ready to handle quite 15Tbps of traffic ripping through an information center, up from simply 2Tbps for a current Catalyst 6500 switch.

- At that rate, the switch might run five million concurrent transcontinental conferencing sessions using Cisco’s TelePresence Collaboration system. It might additionally copy the whole searchable web in seven.5 minutes.

- One interface module for the Nexus 7000 chassis can associate with thirty two 10Gbps ports, and also the platform is meant to support future interfaces together with 100Gbps.

- the corporate spent concerning $250 million on analysis and development for the new platform, and at its peak, the Nexus R&D team numbered quite five hundred engineers, in line with Tom Edsall, senior vp and chief technology officer of Cisco’s information Center Business Unit.

As with the Catalyst 6000 Series and also the CRS-1, Cisco developed the Nexus with a watch to long-term wants. Where the CRS marked the debut of IOS XR, the primary modular version of IOS, the Nexus can have Cisco’s 1st OS that may be totally virtualized, known as NX-OS. The Nexus also will break new ground with its lossless switching material, a departure from ancient Ethernet — though backward compatible with it, Cisco said.

The system additionally represents a raffle on FCoE (Fibre Channel over Ethernet), a still-emerging customary for sending ancient Fibre Channel storage network traffic over Ethernet. Though the new customary can most likely succeed with the backing of Cisco and alternative huge vendors, the put in base of Fibre Channel is big, said american cluster analyst Zeus Kerravala. there’ll be a proving amount for Ethernet as a reliable, lossless information center transport, he said.

Cisco expects the uptake of the new platform to require time, simply because it did with the CRS. the primary Nexus product can prolong sale within the second quarter of this year, and within the 1st year Cisco expects to visualize largely trials of the new system, said Jayshree Ullal, senior vp of Cisco’s information center cluster. Deployments can most likely begin to select up within the second, third and fourth years once the introduction, she said.

But simply because the chance was huge for the Cisco CRS, as video and alternative traffic rose quick on carrier networks, the possibility to capture next-generation information centers is probably going to justify Cisco’s efforts on the Nexus line. Web-based services and applications, similarly as outsourced computing offerings from Amazon.com and alternative firms, are powering the expansion of huge information centers. Microsoft’s MSN division may be a take a look at client of the Nexus, said Ullal. Asked whether or not the mighty Google would purchase in similarly, Ullal said, “I would hope therefore.”

There are ample nice things regarding aiming to a club for an evening out, and it is a good way to urge out and regarding, meet new folks and luxuriate in cutting some shapes on the dance floor.

Another usually overlooked and of happening an evening out though is progressing to dress up and appearance your best – to perhaps attempt sporting one thing new or one thing you would not normally be daring enough to wear to a different event. The glamour is unquestionably a part of the attraction of happening an evening out, and whereas you may fancy turning heads and searching attractive, if you’ve a partner on an evening out with you they’re going to little question fancy the chance to examine you dressed up to the nines moreover.

But how does one go regarding wanting your best for an evening out? How are you able to make certain you look hot whereas still wanting sensible and acceptable for an evening out? party dress suit you.

The Mission Statement

When you are preparing for an evening in a very club the most intention ought to be to form yourself look attractive and eye catching. this is not a cocktail party or a marriage thus you do not got to worry an excessive amount of regarding wanting elegant – you are instead about to look glitzy and attractive.

However at an equivalent time this is often one thing of a balancing act for 2 reasons – one as a result of you wish to form certain that you simply} do not appear as if a slut as this is often just not a decent look and it’ll bring the incorrect sort of attention, and 2 as a result of you wish to form certain that what you are sporting is sensible and acceptable for staying on your feet and dancing for hours at a time.

Sexy Not Slutty

So how does one look attractive and draw attention to your assets while not wanting too trampy? Well the most effective technique to use is to come to a decision on that feature you wish to indicate off – and you’ll be able to choose your legs, your bum or your cleavage. Showing off anyone of those options is okay, however you do not need to indicate over one or you will then begin to appear desperate and you will reduce the impact of every body half.

If you wish to indicate your cleavage then you’ll be able to do that with an occasional cut prime, and if you wish to indicate your legs then you’ll be able to in fact achieve that employing a short skirt. Likewise to indicate of your bum and your general figure then employing a tight form-fitting dress is additionally a good technique.

However although you are doing simply show one feature you’ll be able to still look slutty if you are taking it too way. for example do not wear leggings while not having some reasonably skirt (as some ladies do) and do not wear skirts that are too short if there is any probability that you simply would show your pants (not cool!).

Casual vs Glamorous

At an equivalent time another balancing act is knowing how dressed up to travel. in fact you wish to appear your best and you wish to appear glamorous, however at an equivalent time you furthermore may need to avoid wanting like you have gone to an excessive amount of effort when everybody else is dressed casually. this can partly depend upon the venue you’re heading to and conjointly what the opposite folks in your cluster are going to be sporting. discuss with them, and appearance at photos of what folks normally wear in that club, and then use this to come to a decision what you wish to wear for the event.

In general if you’re happening an evening out then you may need to appear dressed up whereas not too over the highest. the most effective choices then are either to wear tight jeans or a skirt with a pleasant prime like a boob tube, or to wear a comparatively party dress. It will be glitzy and tight, however not one thing you’d think about sporting to promenade.

From here it’s things like your jewelry, your bag, and your shoes that may cause you to look the half. If you’ll be able to wear heels then this is often continuously a good thanks to provide you with a a lot of assured and attractive posture moreover on brag your vogue once more.

To the storied names of Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, add Kevin Johnson and Pradeep Sindhu.
Johnson, CEO of Juniper Networks (JNPR), told analysts on Thursday that he tries to model his partnership with Juniper Chief Technical Officer Sindhu once those successful government pairings at Microsoft (MSFT) and Apple (AAPL). Their relationship is thus central to Juniper that even major innovations like QFabric, the network design at the center of the company’s future data-center strategy, pop out of conferences between them. Johnson spoke at Juniper’s annual money Analyst Meeting in San Francisco.

Juniper’s management approach is much completely different from that of rival Cisco Systems (CSCO), that is constructed around a plethora of councils and boards centered on explicit areas of technology. Cisco Chairman and CEO John Chambers implemented the new management structure across the corporate in 2007, replacing what he referred to as a “command and control” organization. Though they ultimately report back to Chambers, the councils are to blame for finding probably profitable new markets and polishing off initiatives to enter them. Cisco has entered over thirty new adjacent markets within the past many years.

Granted, Juniper could be a abundant smaller company than is Cisco. It reported simply wanting US$4.1 billion in revenue for the year ended Dec. 31, compared with Cisco’s over $40 billion in revenue in its last fiscal year, ending in July 2010. and in contrast to Cisco, Juniper has centered solely on networking instead of branching into alternative areas like shopper electronics and computing systems. however the manner the corporate addresses major technology problems is notable for its intimacy.
Working with the workplace of the Chief Technical Officer, Sindhu identifies upcoming changes within the world of IT and conceptualizes ways in which to deal with them, Johnson said. Then, Johnson can get a decision from his assistant that Sindhu desires to satisfy with him.

“Pradeep can are available, and that we can sit in my workplace, [writing] on my whiteboard, and that i can have a lecture on some new disruption that is attainable,” Johnson said. “I can raise a thousand queries.” Then, he usually asks Sindhu to write down a white paper of 1 to 3 pages on the difficulty that they had simply mentioned. Johnson keeps a portfolio of those papers.
“Typically, we tend to keep them between the 2 of us” and continue talking concerning the concept for a minute, Johnson said. In time, they pass several of those concepts on to Juniper’s incubation lab, where the company’s prime inventors work on no over 5 proposals at a time, in groups of no over 5 individuals, he said. the most effective are passed on to Juniper’s business units, where they become a part of every division’s three-year product road map.

A U.S. decide has declined to raise an uncommon order that stops Motorola Mobility from imposing a ban in Germany on the sale of Microsoft’s Windows seven OS and XBox 360.

The federal decide in Seattle said Monday he might revisit his order that the German ruling not be enforced if circumstances modification, representatives from Microsoft and Motorola said.

Judge James Robart, who is overseeing the dispute within the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, had ordered Motorola to not enforce any injunction awarded in Germany before he had dominated on the underlying patent problems. Robart said the German ruling, if enforced, would improperly have an effect on the negotiations between the businesses.

The decide said his court ought to be the one to choose the difficulty as a result of it’s where the primary suit within the patent dispute was filed.

Microsoft’s deputy general counsel, David Howard, said he was “pleased the temporary restraining order remains in place pending the any ruling from the court.”

The case relates mainly to patents Motorola holds on display screen technologies. a number of the technologies compose a part of the H.264 video codec commonplace. Patented materials that become a part of trade standards are needed to be licensed beneath terms that are honest, cheap and non-discriminatory (FRAND). Microsoft argues that Motorola’s terms — it takes two.25 p.c of the ultimate value of every device sold — aren’t cheap. Motorola has fired back that, by suing, Microsoft has breeched its licensing terms and freed Motorola of any obligation to license the patents to Microsoft.

Microsoft said that within the Monday hearing, it asked decide Robart to supply outline judgment on whether or not Motorola had breached its agreement with the standards committee to supply patented technologies that are a part of trade standards on FRAND terms. Motorola, in turn, said it asked him to work out whether or not Microsoft had relinquished its rights to a FRAND licensing agreement by bringing suit against Motorola.

“We stay assured that Motorola Mobility has honored its FRAND commitments,” Motorola spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson said in an email.

Robart’s ruling is anticipated within the next number of weeks. If he declines to supply outline judgment, the problems are going to be addressed during a jury trial set to start Nov. 19.

PaidPiper, a startup which will debut at the CTIA Wireless show in the week, is developing a mobile cash transfer system suited to developed economies where the credit-card infrastructure is dominant.

Money transfers via mobile are common in several developing countries where ancient banking and credit cards are scarce. PaidPiper, based mostly in San Francisco, is putting credit-card numbers at the middle of its payment system, that is because of become obtainable this summer. It says these is easier each to offer and to pay than gift cards or virtual coupons. the corporate is using APIs (application programming interfaces) from MasterCard WorldWide, that the corporate is creating obtainable to 3rd parties to develop new uses for credit-card infrastructure.

With PaidPiper, retailers and makes are ready to offer customers incentives by issuing distinctive MasterCard numbers on the spot, either personally or via the mobile network. customers will be ready to raise the businesses for incentives, that a vendor will deliver in exchange for a client action like filling out a survey, said Atif Hussein, PaidPiper’s CEO. He introduced the concept at Mobile internet and Apps World, a aspect conference held in New Orleans on Monday, the day before CTIA begins.

PaidPiper could be a SaaS (software-as-a-service) supplier of customer-relationship management, Hussein said. The startup used MasterCard’s MoneySend API to develop its own API, that it’ll use because the basis of a service that third parties offers underneath their own brands.

PaidPiper can demonstrate its system with an app of its own creating, called, Ok’d, that it expects to possess obtainable free for Apple iOS within the middle of this summer. The gap screen of the app has an “Ask” and a “Give” button. As an example of how it might work, Hussein said a client who saw a videogame he liked in an exceedingly store might put off his phone, faucet the “Ask” button, and raise for $10 as an incentive to shop for the sport.

If the maker of the sport participated in PaidPiper’s service, it might then raise the patron to fill out a survey in exchange for the $10. when the client stuffed it out, the sport maker would use PaidPiper to possess a credit-card range issued to him. That range would merely show up on the consumer’s phone, and if he wished to shop for something within the future, either on-line or in an exceedingly store, he would offer the amount or show it to a clerk who would sort it in.

Consumers also can download the Ok’d app and issue card numbers themselves. as an example, a parent might provides a teen-ager a selected add of cash on the fly, from her mobile to the child’s, and will even limit where that money may be spent, in keeping with Hussein. PaidPiper will try this by “geofencing” the utilization of the cardboard to a selected space, like one store or all locations of a given retail chain, he said. Alternatively, a client might scan the barcode of a product in an exceedingly store and raise somebody else — a parent or a boss — for variety to acquire it.

PaidPiper also can be used to offer incentives personally, from phone to phone, that is good for tiny businesses, the corporate said. instead of having to follow up an in-store encounter with a later contact via e-mail, a merchant will reward the client immediately, PaidPiper said.

Though the thought of typing in long credit-card numbers could appear cumbersome, PaidPiper’s service takes advantage of a huge infrastructure that’s already ubiquitous in most advanced economies. as an example, MasterCard has one.7 billion cards in use these days, issued by twenty two,000 totally different banks, and MasterCard is accepted at thirty three million locations round the world, said David Butler, MasterCard’s vp and open API product manager.

The PaidPiper system is prepared to become additional streamlined for in-store use when NFC (near-field computing) becomes additional widely obtainable in phones and point-of-sale systems, Hussein said.

A jury has found that Google infringed Oracle’s Java copyrights in Android however couldn’t decide unanimously if the the infringement was protected by “fair use.”

The jury’s verdict, delivered Monday once per week of deliberation, may be a partial victory for Oracle in its lawsuit against Google, however Oracle can have to be compelled to wait longer — presumably for a retrial — to check whether or not Google can escape liability with its claim of truthful use.

Google’s attorney, Robert Van Nest, immediately told the decide that Google would file for a mistrial. Google’s argument are that identical jury should decide each the copyright infringement and truthful use problems. The decide told each side to submit legal briefs on that issue.

As soon because the verdict was delivered Monday, the trial moved into the patents part of the case, with Oracle creating its gap statement. The trial is in 3 elements, to handle copyrights, patents, and then any damages Oracle ought to receive.

But though the patents part is underneath manner, the copyright part is much from concluded. still because the outstanding issue of truthful use, decide William Alsup , who is hearing the case, should decide whether or not Oracle’s Java APIs (application programming interfaces) will be copyrighted in the slightest degree underneath U.S. law.

Historically, APIs haven’t been thought of copyrightable. however Oracle argues that the the “structure, sequence and organization” of the 166 API packages in Java are sufficiently advanced to advantage protection.

Google has till late Monday to submit its arguments on that issue to Alsup. The decide has not said when he can rule on the law question, however some observers expect it to happen before the damages part of the trial begins in concerning 2 weeks.

“We appreciate the jury’s efforts and apprehend that truthful use and infringement are 2 sides of identical coin,” Google said during a statement sent via email. “The core issue is whether or not the APIs here are copyrightable, and that is for the court to choose. we have a tendency to expect to prevail on this issue and Oracle’s different claims.”

Oracle thanked the jury for the decision. “The overwhelming proof demonstrated that Google knew it required a license which its unauthorized fork of Java in Android shattered Java’s central write once run anywhere principle,” it said.

At least one business analyst was troubled by the jury’s call. “I was alittle disappointed by the decision, as i believe that the precedent of copyright for APIs exposes a true will of worms and doubtless stifles software innovation,” Forrester analyst Jeffrey Hammond said via email.

“The silver lining was the deadlock on truthful use,” he said.

The jury truly had many copyright inquiries to select the [verdict form], though those concerning the API infringement and truthful use were thought of the foremost vital.

On another purpose, the jury set Sun’s public statements concerning Java were sufficient to to convince Google that it did not would like a license to use Java. however in another setback for Google, the jury set there was insufficient proof to point out Google relied on those statements.

That means the jury wasn’t swayed by a much-discussed blog post from then-Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz, during which he congratulated Google on its unleash of Android and said that it might be sensible for Java.

Google did prevail on another problems, together with whether or not it infringed a copyright for Oracle’s Java API documentation. The jury additionally dominated in Google’s favor in 2 out of 3 instances where it had been accused of copying alittle quantity of code line-by-line from Java.

It’s not clear nevertheless when the truthful use issue are place to a jury once more, and Alsup features a few of choices at his disposal. Last week he said he would possibly resubmit the question to the jury once the patents part, however the lawyers for Oracle and Google were each opposition that concept and favor a brand new trial.

Fair use permits the copying of artistic works for sure restricted functions, like teaching, commentary and satire. The jury during this case thought of factors like whether or not Android was “transformative,” which means did it quantity to a brand new creation or was it merely by-product from the Java APIs. They additionally thought of abundant|what proportion|what quantity} of the work as an entire was copied; whether or not the utilization was commercial; and the way much damage Oracle suffered as a result.

The patents part of the trial that simply started is anticipated to last concerning 2 weeks. Google can build its gap statement Tuesday morning and then Oracle can decision its 1st witness to the stand.

It was only after my wife acquired an iPhone 4S this week that I fully understood the importance of big data for SaaS vendors. Did you need to train Siri to recognise your voice, I wondered? What I found from a brief Internet search was a revelation. I’m old enough to remember the PC-based voice recognition systems of the late 1990s from the likes of IBM and Dragon Software. Those systems had to be trained over a period of a week or more to recognise the sound of the user’s voice. Siri doesn’t do that. Instead, it matches the voice it hears to a library of voice patterns and uses the closest match to interpret what you say.

What’s happening behind the scenes is that Siri has analyzed tens of thousands of voices and identified patterns that run across all of those voices. As a cloud-sourced app, it can continue to refine and hone that central library of voice patterns based on what it encounters in the field. This is where the cloud approach really wins. The old, PC-based systems could learn a person’s voice, but they couldn’t use that learning to improve their ability to learn the next user’s. A cloud app like Siri can continuously evolve its core capability with every new user.

So instead of having to perfectly predict every anticipated type of voice (and inevitably fail on the unexpected edge cases), the cloud-based app can simply react to what it finds. As my wife started using the phone on a family car journey, Siri dealt effortlessly with the mixed voices of my wife and two excited children. If you’d set out to develop a voice-recognition system, would you have thought to include that use case in the spec? Siri doesn’t have to make that judgement — in fact, Siri doesn’t judge at all, it just works with what it finds. That, along with the broad base of data that it gets to work with, is what makes it so powerful.

This is what makes big data so important for SaaS vendors. It’s not simply the ability to analyse huge pools of data. What really matters is the broad base of that data, gathered from a large mix of users within which patterns of behavior can be analysed and then applied elsewhere. Think of it as swarm data — lots of individual, autonomous behaviors that collectively add up to reusable patterns.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about cloud collaboration vendor Huddle’s new file synchronization capability. This uses analysis of prior behavior across its user base to decide which shared files to download to a user’s local device, and then continues learning from behavior patterns among the user and their colleagues to make its predictive downloading more and more accurate. Like Siri, the historic analysis of its existing broad base of user behavior gives it a head start in delivering accurate results from the get-go.

SaaS vendors are in a unique position because of the collective behaviorial data they’re able to amass. For the past year, email provider Mailchimp has employed a data scientist on what it calls its Email Genome Project, looking for patterns in the millions of emails and campaigns its customers generate. It’s been instrumental in finding and shutting down malicious email accounts, as well as generating benchmark stats that customers can use to evaluate their performance. These are useful advances, but what I’d really like to see next is to have those benchmarks brought into the app to evaluate mailings while they’re being created.

I know that many SaaS vendors think of big data as a mine of potentially useful information but are uncertain where they are most likely to unlock significant value. To my mind, it’s the behavioral data that holds the most promise because, in analyzing how their swarms of users behave, they can discover new ways to automate common patterns of behavior. Those reusable patterns that can shortcut a learning process and deliver faster results are going to be like gold dust for those who are first to surface them.
