Yahoo is getting serious about turning YSlow into a real community driven project. The company put up YSlow on YDN in 2007, but now they’ve gone all-in with a BSD-licensed release on GitHub.

On the off chance you’re not already familiar with YSlow, it is used to analyze Web pages against a set of best practices. YSlow crawls the DOM of a page, gets information about all of the page’s components and then generates a grade for each of the 23 performance rules. YSlow has extensions for Firefox and Chrome, and has bookmarklets for Opera, Safari and mobile devices.

YSlow project lead Marcel Duran says that developers are “encouraged to use the source code, learn how it works, fork it to make your own projects and enhance it with new rules, features and whatever will improve this tool we all love.”

The project is entirely written in JavaScript, HTML and CSS so it should be pretty easy for interested Web developers to jump in and contribute. If you’re interested in contributing to YSlow upstream, Duran says to follow the development tree rather than the stable tree.

YSlow’s GitHub repo was announced late last week, but already has 44 forks and 538 watchers. It’ll be interesting to see how it evolves now that Yahoo is throwing open the doors to community contributions.

Apple has filed another U.S. patent lawsuit against Samsung Electronics and is seeking a preliminary injunction asking a federal judge to halt sales of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone while the case makes its way through the court.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, with a redacted copy of the case made publicly available Friday night. The lawsuit involves four Apple patents for technology that allows users to touch a phone number on a Web page to dial the number, word placement, Siri voice recognition and unified search, and the ability to unlock a smartphone by sliding an image from one location to another.

“Sales of the Galaxy Nexus during this litigation will cause irreparable harm to Apple,” the company said in the lawsuit. “The smartphone market is at a critical juncture, as the overwhelming majority of consumers move to smartphones, and the consumers’ long-term preferences and purchases may be determined to a great extent by the operating system on their first smartphone.” The importance of that initial purchase “is precisely why Samsung copies Apple’s products and incorporates Apple’s patented features, i.e., in order to lure crucial first-time purchasers away from Apple.”

Samsung’s decision to sell the Galaxy Nexus in the U.S. “is all the more egregious considering that Samsung did so in the face of this Court’s prior determination that Samsung’s earlier devices likely infringe certain Apple patents and that sales of such devices would likely cause Apple ‘to lose market share to Samsung’ that ‘could support a finding of irreparable harm’,” the latest lawsuit says.

Google and Samsung in October of last year unveiled the Galaxy Nexus, which runs Ice Cream Sandwich, the latest version of the Android operating system. The Apple lawsuit specifically targets Ice Cream Sandwich “with its interactive features” in the lawsuit, contending that Galaxy Nexus sales will mean that “Apple loses not only market share in the smartphone market, but also an untold number of sales in the broader mobile device market.”

Besides losing potential iPhone customers to the Galaxy Nexus, Apple will also suffer “incalculable” lost sales for iMacs, Macbooks and Apple TVs, the company contends. Further, Apple will be deprived of revenue it would have made through the iTunes store for both digital media and apps sales.

Apple has filed lawsuits against Samsung around the world, claiming that Samsung products including smartphones and tablets violate numerous Apple patents. Apple has been granted injunctions in a number of the cases, with judges ordering Samsung to stop selling specific products, as well as requiring the company to make changes to its products. A German judge ruled last week that changes Samsung Electronics has made to the Galaxy Tab 10.1N are enough that Apple’s intellectual property rights are no longer being infringed with that product. However, another judge in a separate German court ruled that Samsung can continue to sell the Galaxy Nexus in Germany.

Apple contends in the new U.S. lawsuit that it “has been forced to relentlessly pursue Samsung all over the world” and “yet while these cases progress — even after this Court found Apple likely to succeed on its infringement claims against prior Samsung devices — Samsung continues to launch infringing copycat products with impunity, all with the assumption that courts, including this court, will not stop Samsung before the gain to Samsung, and harm to Apple, is virtually irreversible.”

Representatives of Samsung could not immediately be reached to comment about the lawsuit. The company has, however, continued to defend itself against the lawsuits Apple has filed worldwide.

IBM has designed and helped to build a 900,000-square-foot data center in India that it says is the largest in that country in terms of size and power. It’s also among the largest in the world.

The data center was built for an Indian company, Tulip Telecom, which will make physical data center space available for clients. It will also provide cloud infrastructure services using IBM systems.

Mega-sized data centers are becoming increasing commonplace but this facility in Bangalore is different in one key respect: it’s vertical.

In the U.S., many large data centers are built in relatively rural areas that allow single story, mall-style construction that stretch over multiple acres. That approach doesn’t work in India, where land and space is at a premium, said Steve Sams, vice president for IBM global site and facility services. “High quality land in good locations is precious,” he said.

The first three floors are shared space. There are also four five-story towers where the data center facilities will be located. Each floor will have approximately 10,000 square feet of raised floor space built in modular style, or about 200,000 square feet of raised floor space in total. There will be two to three data centers on each floor, Sams said.

The facility will be able to support 100 megawatts, which puts it among the largest facilities in the world. It is located in one of the better areas in India for power reliability and is connected to two different grids, said Sams.

The facility has multiple levels of security , including an intelligent camera system with 1,500 cameras that can track a visitor throughout the facility, said Sams.

Sams said the data center will have a PUE (power usage effectiveness) of 1.5. PUE is the ratio of total facility power, including everything from the cooling systems, UPS, and lighting, to IT equipment power, the load associated with all IT equipment, the servers and storage .

The building that houses the data center was a shell for an uncompleted project within a business park. Work began in March last year.

The demand for data center space in India is expected to more than double over the next four years, according to Gartner. It said the market is expected to reach $609 million this year and rise to $1.3 billion through 2016.

Data centers are getting gigantic. CyrusOne, for instance, announced last fall that it purchased a 40-acre parcel in Chandler, Ariz., to build a 1 million- squar-foot data center with 110 megawatts of power capacity.

The National Security Agency is building a 1 million-square-foot data center in Salt Lake City at a cost of $1.2 billion.

China is building a cloud computing complex that’s expected to have some 6.2 million square feet of buildings, with 646,000 square feet of data center space rising to more than a million. China is experiencing, overall, a data center boom .

I have discovered online shopping to be the best way of purchasing products, especially if you are very busy and do not have time to go out and buy it yourself. Through online shopping, you could easily purchase products in a couple of clicks. Make sure that you are in the right and trusted website. I have visited this website and their online shopping features are so amazing. They have worldwide shipping services. They also have a wide selection of items, from electronic gadget, smartphones, dresses, car accessories, etc. This website has really helped me not only with shopping but also with finding such great items. This car led Bulbs are so much better than your ordinary car bulb. Aside from its quality of light produced, it is also more efficient to use since it consumes lower energy and also takes a long time before you replace it. I have needed brighter and more efficient light source for my car’s interior. Most of the time I find myself spending minutes looking for stuff that I must have had dropped or left in the car. Their shipping services was also great compared to other online stores, they handle their products and orders very well. After my first purchase, I was quite sure that would not be my last purchase. It was then followed by my purchase of my dream Evening Dresses. I was so surprised by its wholesale price compared to that which I have seen on stores in my area. I was really happy finding this online store. Now, before I purchase from stores, I usually check out their website first, just in case they have those kinds of products available for me.

Cisco Systems has completed most of a major restructuring that began early this year, and on Wednesday posted revenue and profit for its fiscal first quarter that exceeded analysts’ expectations.

For the quarter ended Oct. 29, Cisco reported revenue of US$11.3 billion, up 4.7 percent from a year earlier, and net income of $1.8 billion or $0.33 per share. Earnings per share fell 2.9 percent from the year earlier.

Not counting certain one-time items, Cisco had net income of $2.3 billion or $0.43. The results were in line with the consensus of expectations from analysts polled by Thomson Financial, who forecast earnings of $0.39 per share on revenue of $11.02 billion.

The report was the first since Cisco set a new long-term growth forecast at a financial analyst conference in September. The company now expects between 5 percent and 7 percent annual revenue gains over the next three years, following several quarters of disappointing results and a major reorganization. It expects earnings per share to increase between 7 percent and 9 percent per year.

In a press release on Wednesday, CEO John Chambers said a majority of the company’s reorganization was complete.

In its fiscal fourth-quarter report released in August, Cisco had posted a drop of more than one third in net income and an increase of only 3.3 percent in revenue from the year-earlier quarter.

Since early this year, the company has moved to sharpen its focus on five key areas of its business; core routing and switching, collaboration, data-center virtualization, video, and tying these elements together in an overall architecture.

After nearly two years and a lot of suspected smoke-and-mirrors, Cisco Systems and Microsoft yesterday revealed a joint architecture that pairs each of the tech giants’ network access security solutions.

At yesterday’s Security Standard conference in Boston, executives outlined the interoperability between Cisco’s Network Admission Control (NAC) and Microsoft’s Network Access Protection (NAP), making good on a partnership that was announced in October 2004.

A newly released downloadable white paper details how both NAC and NAP will work together for security policy enforcement and health assessment as part of a single architecture. The paper also details how to embed Cisco’s network infrastructure with Microsoft’s Windows Vista desktop operating system and future versions of the OS server called Longhorn.

The two powerhouse vendors also released a roadmap for bringing the NAC and NAP combination to market, with beta programs scheduled for later this year. Once Longhorn becomes available in late 2007, users will be able to deploy the Cisco/Microsoft solution. As part of the pairing, Cisco and Microsoft have cross-licensed their NAC and NAP protocols to ensure interoperability.

Yankee Group vice president Zeus Kerravala said the long-expected pairing gives users flexibility in their network access choices. Since Microsoft NAP will be desktop focused and Cisco NAC is network focused, there will be no need for a string of smaller in-line appliances to achieve comprehensive
